Missions principales

Le/la Chargé(e) SIG appuie techniquement le programme Nigeria de WCS, en priorité dans le paysage de Yankari, sur la gestion des données spatiales, la cartographie et l'analyse géospatiale pour renforcer le suivi de la biodiversité, l'application de la loi et la planification de la conservation. Il/elle collecte et intègre les données GPS issues des patrouilles de rangers et des enquêtes socio-écologiques, gère les bases de données spatiales, et assure la validation et la mise à jour des couches SIG relatives aux espèces, aux patrouilles, aux habitats et aux menaces. Il/elle produit des cartes et des analyses pour éclairer les décisions opérationnelles et stratégiques, soutient la vérification terrain des données de télédétection, et contribue à l'intégration des résultats dans les stratégies de conservation. Le poste implique également un appui technique au système de suivi SMART, la formation des rangers et du personnel de terrain à l'utilisation du GPS et aux applications SIG, ainsi que la conception d'outils et de tableaux de bord de suivi-évaluation. Enfin, le/la titulaire contribue à la préparation des rapports donateurs, des notes techniques et des supports de présentation, tout en documentant les méthodologies et les enseignements tirés pour le partage interne de connaissances.

Profil recherche

Le/la candidat(e) idéal(e) justifie d'un diplôme universitaire en géographie, SIG, sciences environnementales ou domaine connexe, un master étant un atout. Une expérience professionnelle d'au moins trois ans en gestion de données spatiales est requise, idéalement dans le secteur de la conservation, de la gestion des ressources naturelles ou dans un environnement humanitaire. Une bonne connaissance du suivi-évaluation (M&E) et des systèmes de gestion de l'information est un plus. Le/la candidat(e) doit maîtriser les logiciels SIG (ArcGIS, QGIS) et les outils GPS, avoir une expérience des systèmes de monitoring type SMART, et connaître les techniques de télédétection et d'analyse spatiale. Les compétences comportementales comprennent le sens du détail, la rigueur dans la gestion des données, la capacité à former et encadrer des équipes techniques, de bonnes aptitudes rédactionnelles et relationnelles, ainsi que la capacité à travailler dans des environnements isolés et exigeants. Une approche collaborative et orientée équipe est indispensable, tout comme une bonne capacité d'adaptation aux contextes ruraux africains et aux enjeux transdisciplinaires mêlant conservation, développement communautaire et coordination avec les autorités locales.

Conditions proposees

Le poste est basé à Yankari, dans l'État de Bauchi, au Nigeria, au sein de l'équipe du programme WCS Nigeria. Il s'agit d'un contrat à durée déterminée de 13 mois, renouvelable sous réserve de la disponibilité des fonds, à temps plein. WCS Nigeria Program is seeking a GIS Officer will provide technical support in spatial data management, mapping, and analysis to strengthen biodiversity monitoring, law enforcement, and conservation planning within the WCS Yankari Landscape with possible support to the entire Nigerian programme

Job Summary

The role involves managing geospatial datasets, supporting field teams with GPS and mapping tools, and producing high-quality maps and analyses to inform decision-making. The position reports to the Biomonitoring Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities

Data Collection & Management

  • Support ranger and community biomonitoring teams in collecting accurate GPS data during patrols and social/ecological surveys.
  • Manage spatial databases and ensure proper storage, validation, and integration of field data.
  • Maintain and update GIS layers for species distribution, patrol coverage, habitat monitoring, and threat mapping.

Mapping & Analysis

  • Produce maps and spatial analyses to support law enforcement, biomonitoring, community conservation, and conservation planning.
  • Conduct spatial analysis of patrol data, wildlife observations, and threats using GIS software.
  • Support ground-truthing of remote sensing data and integrate findings into conservation strategies.

Technical Support & Capacity Building

  • Train rangers and field staff in GPS use, data collection, and basic GIS applications.
  • Provide technical support for SMART-based patrol monitoring and reporting systems.
  • Assist in developing spatial tools and dashboards for monitoring and reporting.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Contribute to preparation of spatial data inputs for donor reports, technical briefs, and presentations.
  • Document GIS processes, methodologies, and lessons learned for internal knowledge sharing.
  • Ensure timely submission of maps and spatial data products to programme leadership.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field (Master’s degree is an advantage).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in GIS and spatial data management, preferably in conservation or natural resource management. Experience and a good knowledge of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) will be an added advantage.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and GPS tools.
  • Experience with SMART or similar conservation monitoring systems (desirable).
  • Familiarity with remote sensing and spatial analysis techniques.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical skills in GIS mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data management.
  • Ability to train and mentor field staff in GIS and GPS use.
  • Strong communication and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in remote and challenging environments.
  • Team-orientated, with the ability to collaborate across technical and field teams.

Additional Requirements

  • Fluency in spoken and written English; knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to other field sites when required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to wildlife conservation and community engagement.
